There will be a lecture about BlingCrete™ by Thorsten Klooster and Heike Klussmann as part of the congress “High-Tech Materials in Construction Industry”. This congress presented by the German Federal Ministery of Economics and Technology BMWi, the Federal Ministery of Education and Research, the German Centre for Innovation RKW and the VDI Technologiezentrum examines strategies in high-tech for the construction industry. The event takes place on January 15. at 3.45 pm at the ICM Munich Forum. The participation in the conference is free and can be reserved online. Whiter than White is an exploration of the pursuit of ‘whiteness’ in the built environment. What makes a material white and what concessions must be made by designers in the face of practical, economic and environmental constraints? The exhibition demonstrates that achieving an iconic ‘whiteness’ is not as simple as it first appears.

Small and large-scale samples across a range of architectural materials – glass, metal, natural stone, man-made stone, concrete, timber, textiles, coatings, plastics and composites – showcase the realities of working inside a set of project-related constraints. Whiter than White will also illustrate the role of lighting in the pursuit of whiteness and describe each material’s colour within a professional colour space.

A world premiere, Whiter than White is a highly curated showcase of the collaborative expertise of Materials Council and Architonic.

Whiter than White will take place between September 20 – 23 at Super Brands London during London Design Festival 2012.

The Siegmunds Hof Student’s Residential Complex was built in 1961 and lies near the university nestled between the Spree and Tiergarten districts. By popular request from residents and other students, the commissioned architect’s office “Susanne Hofmann Architekten BDA” developed the versatile domestic shapes and ground plans, as well as a fantastic, ecological landscape, which is in line with today’s concepts of a healthy, environmentally conscious form of coexistence and cohabitation. As a result, an idyllic retreat was created for the students. Particular eye-catchers are the pink coloured seating elements that are made of architectural concrete and feature light-reflecting surfaces. The renovation project included the production of 8 elements, weighing around 10 tonnes each, which were manufactured in Hering’s own precast plant and mounted on site at the complex. The optical highlight of the concrete furniture is the innovative, light-reflecting surface of BlingCrete™. Thanks to the coloured micro glass beads, which are embedded in the concrete, the incidence of both natural sunlight and artificial light brings the surfaces of the concrete elements to life. Project architect Daniel Hülseweg of the Susanne Hofmann Architekten company exclaims: “We are delighted that we were able to use BlingCrete™, which is a new and innovative material, for the design of the outdoor facilities. The optical effects change according to various degrees of light incidence to create a real eye-catcher!”

International leading architects such as Dominique Perrault and numerous rising stars in the scene will present current façade trends, spectacular façade solutions and new façade technologies at the façade conference entitled `Smart Interfaçades` and will lead discussions with researchers and engineers on façades of the future. The façade conference will be organised by baunetz in co-operation with Messe Stuttgart.”

The Munich Creative Business Week (MCBW) provided the backdrop for the presentation of the iF awards at BMW Welt in Munich, held on February 10, 2012. BlingCrete™ received one of the coveted iF gold awards for highly innovative material development and outstanding design achievements. The winning entries of the internationally renowned design competition are also on show at the iF gold award exhibition at the BMW Museum (February 11-26, 2012) and will also be presented at the iF design exhibitions, including shows at the CeBIT (March 6-10, 2012), at Hamburg’s HarbourCity (second half of 2012) and in Haikou (Hainan Island/China, from May 2012 onwards).
